Four academic researchers of the Department of Chemistry were recently elected to as members of the Board of Directors of the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas.

Academician Professor Emeritus Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD and Professor Christina A. Binag, PhD were elected to a three-year term (2025-2028), while Department of Chemistry Chair Alan Rodelle M. Salcedo, PhD was elected to a two-year term (2025-2027). Finally, Assoc. Prof. Felicidad Christina Pe帽afiel, PhD was elected to a one-year term (2025-2026).

The Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (Chemical Society of the Philippines) is an 85-year-old society of chemists. It publishes scholarly articles in Kimika and regularly hosts conferences and scientific activities.

The Gold and Silver Series are granted in recognition of the research productivity and leadership of academic staff in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on the faculty members鈥 research publications (Author by-line should indicate the 水果视频 as the affiliation), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

CICS academic staff and 水果视频 researcher Asst. Prof. Donna D. Acula, Ph.D., delivered the response on behalf of the awardees, while the Executive Assistant for Intellectual Property and Research Assoc. Prof. Michael Jorge Peralta served as the Master of Ceremonies.

The Research Fortnight opened on February 28, 2023 with an opening ceremony graced by the Department of Science and Technology Secretary Hon. Renato Solidum, Jr., Ph.D. This included the launch of the Thomasian Research Repository, led by the UST Miguel de Benavides Library Chief Librarian Ms. Ma. Cecilia D. Lobo, and the opening of research exhibits at the Main Building lobby.

Activities of the research centers for the Research Fortnight include: 鈥淢abathalang Pag-aaral: Doing Filipino Theology and Religious Education in honor of Dr. Jose 鈥楰a Joe鈥 De Mesa鈥 by the Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics; the 鈥淚nternational Conference in Chemistry鈥, 鈥淩esearch and Innovation and the UN SDGs (part 3)鈥, 鈥淪a Kaalaman: Mini-symposium on the NRCP Program Sakalam Del Carmen Siargao鈥 by the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

The Research Center for Social Sciences and Education contributed the following activities: 鈥淩CSSED Policy Expo鈥, 鈥淏artolome de las Casas, O.P. Research Conference鈥, and the Rehabilitation Sciences Convention鈥, while the Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities held talks focused on the theme 鈥淔raming the Future of Arts and Humanities Research: A Talk on Creative Industry and Creative AI鈥.

The Center for Health Research and Movement Science and the Research Center for the Health Sciences offered webinars on 鈥淓vidence-Based Practice: Bridging the Gap between Research and Clinical Care鈥 and 鈥淧sychometric Studies in Health Sciences: An Introduction to Measurement Theory鈥.

The TOMASInno Center held the 鈥淭OMASInno Forum 2023鈥 and the Innovation and Technology Support Office held the workshop on the 鈥淔undamentals of the Intellectual Property System鈥.

Two scientific research posters presented by UST researchers won in the poster contest held on the occasion of the 2023 International Chemistry Congress of the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas, held from February 15-17, 2023 at the 水果视频.

The first award-winning research poster was presented by the team of Prof. Christina Binag, PhD, Asst. Prof. Felicidad Christina Ramirez-Penafiel, PhD, Mr. David Joseph Alzate, MSc (PhD Chemistry student), and BS Chemistry alumnus Leighnard Jien R. Felix. The team worked on the project entitled 鈥淧olypyrrole and Rice Straw Biochar on Pineapple-Cotton Fabric as Supercapacitor Electrodes for Symmetrical Coin Assembly.鈥 The poster dealt with the concern on the growing global demand for energy that is both clean and renewable, which led to the need to develop energy storage devices. The paper found that biochar had a positive effect on the capacitance of PPY-based fabric electrodes and showed promise as an energy material for supercapacitors.

Meanwhile, the second work involved BSc Chemistry students under the guidance of Prof. Bernard John V. Tongol, PhD and Ms. Hannah Grace Geronimo, MSc (Graduate School student). The student researchers were senior students Ms. Maricar Cruz, Ms. Mary Elyssa Ranoa, and recent alumnus Mr. Matthew Villanueva. They worked on the project 鈥淔uel Cell Electrocatalysts for Ethanol Oxidation Reaction (eor) and Oxygen Reduction Reaction (orr) Based on Pyrolyzed Coconut Husk Biomass.鈥 The study used coconut husk biochar as a low-cost alternative to Pt-based cathode catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction and as a carbon-based support for Pd-based anode catalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction and found the catalysts to provide promising results for ORR and EOR with sustainable, low-cost source of carbon-based materials.

The Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the Graduate School and the UST Chemistry Society, held a series of webinars from September to December 2021 to continue the flow of knowledge and connectedness among peers. Local and international professionals delivered extensive and up-to-date information in their respective disciplines of chemistry throughout the webinar series on topics that were as diverse as materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, electrochemistry, molecular design, and NMR spectroscopy fundamentals.


Speakers for the December series were from Chung Yuan Christian University Chemistry Department Dr. Hsi-Wei Jia, Dr. Amily Fang-Ju Jou, and Dr. Mei-Yu Yeh of Chung Yuan. They presented chemical research to end the first term’s webinar series. They covered a wide range of chemistry topics, including NMR technology and its applications, developing nucleic acid materials for electrochemical biosensing, and molecular designing using organic molecules. These online chemistry lecture series drew students and teachers from UST, local and international institutions, and research institutes.


For the third webinar in the series which was held in November, speakers were from India and the Philippines. Dr. Avijit Kumar Das of the CHRIST University of India and Dr. Aaron Joseph Villaraza of the University of the Philippines 鈥 Diliman Institute of Chemistry discussed the development of chemosensors in detecting biologically relevant small molecules and the kinetic considerations of lanthanide-DOTA type complex design in medical diagnostics, respectively.


The second webinar, conducted in October, covered various issues in inorganic chemistry research, including peptide-mediated biomineralization, lanthanide luminescence in nitride lattices, and iron (III) spin-crossover materials. Dr. Jose Isagani Janairo of the De La Salle University, Dr. Julius Leao Jr. of the Philippine Textile Research Institute, and Dr. David James Harding of the Functional Materials and Nanotechnology, Walailak University, were the panelists.


The inaugural webinar, which focused on current trends in materials chemistry research, was held in September. Prof. Drexel Camacho of De La Salle University talked about characterizing synthetic materials such as batteries, carbon nanotubes, zeolites, and cellulose using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.


Dr. Joey Ocon of the University of the Philippines-Diliman Department of Chemical Engineering, provided a comprehensive talk on energy storage for the renewable energy transition using a systems approach that included catalysis, electrochemistry, and energy engineering.


Dr. Sangaraju Shanmugan of the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology discussed the electrochemical properties of nanostructured catalysts in the production of carbon-free fuels that are sustainable.


Mr. Zeus Cruz, Ms. Junella Ruth Banawa, and Ms. Angelica Uy (MS Chemistry student) of the Department of Chemistry hosted the webinar series, with assistance from Dr. Dharmatov Albano, Chair of the Department, Dr. Alan Rodelle Salcedo, Dr. Felicidad Christina R. UST Graduate School student David Joseph Alzate won the Best Poster Award during the 35th Philippine Chemistry Congress (PCC) held from September 20 to 24, 2021.


The poster, 鈥淪ustainable and environmentally friendly energy storage devices: polyaniline/MWCNT/water hyacinth-cotton, and polypyrrole/MWCNT/pi帽a-cotton textile composites,鈥 was awarded on September 24, 2021, the last day of the conference.


Alzate鈥檚 research was co-authored with his adviser, Prof. Christina A. Binag, Ph.D., faculty member Asst. Prof. Felicidad Christina Ramirez 鈥 Pe帽afiel, Ph.D., and College of Science students Rica Angela Benipayo and Leighnard Jien R. Felix.
The 35th Philippine Chemistry Congress is the first fully online gathering of chemists and chemistry enthusiasts in the country, with its theme: 鈥淏uild Back Better Through Chemistry. 鈥淭he 鈥楤uild Back Better鈥 (BBB) concept was defined in the 2016 United Nations General Assembly – the 鈥渦se of the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction phases after a disaster.鈥


The PCC is the annual conference of chemists and chemistry enthusiasts in the Philippines. First held in 1984, the PCC has since served as one of the biggest gatherings of chemists and researchers from academe, industry, government, and other sectors, where new knowledge in chemistry and allied fields are brought to the forefront.

With the recent rise in wearable electronics and the ever-growing need for clean, renewable, and sustainable energy storage technologies, the demand for textile supercapacitors also increased.

In response to this need, UST Graduate School student Celine Grace V. Causapin, along with UST Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences and College of Science faculty researchers Dr. Felicidad Christina R. Ramirez and Dr. Christina A. Binag, fabricated a supercapacitor using Abaca-Cotton Fabric (ACF) with Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Polyaniline-Polypyrrole Complex Layer (PAPY) as electrode materials.

This research study by three Thomasian researchers won first place in the Scientific Posters category of the Rapid Fire Competition under the Material Science and Technology Cluster during the 40th Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering (PAASE) Anniversary and 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting and Symposium (APAMS), as announced in the closing ceremonies held via Zoom on August 14, 2020.

The study was able to show that 鈥渢he energy density (1.82 Wh/L) and power density (50.31 W/L) values of PAPY/MWCNT/ACF fall well within the supercapacitor range of the Ragone plot, indicative of an ideal supercapacitor electrode material behavior.鈥 This ACF, though non-conducting, has a high surface area and is suitably porous for supercapacitors, while MWCNTs have high conductivity and stability but low capacitance. PAPY complements the other materials with its good conductivity, improved cycling stability, and high capacitance values.

This means that supercapacitors with these electrode materials are 鈥渃apable of storing and delivering energy, enough to power a 2.88 V LED鈥 and can be used to power a variety of other low power devices such as PC cards, portable media players and flashlights.

Other potential applications are in off-grid areas or rural areas, as well as assistance during and after major calamities.  This textile-based supercapacitor is highly sustainable with the use of indigenous fabrics like abaca blended cotton.

A scientific poster presenting the use of 鈥淎baca-Cotton Fabric with Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and Polyaniline-Polypyrrole Complex Layer鈥 as a greener approach to energy storage won the top prize in the Scientific Posters category of the Rapid Fire Competition organized by the 40th Philippine-American Academy of Science and Engineering and APAMS 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting, results released on August 14, 2020 revealed.

The work by student Celine Grace V. Causapin, along with faculty researchers and , focused on supercapacitors, 鈥渙ne of the most studied energy storage devices due to their high power density, fast charge-discharge rate, and long-term cycle stability.鈥

The study aimed to 鈥渇abricate and characterize a renewable supercapacitor electrode using abaca-cotton fabric (ACF) with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyaniline-polypyrrole complex layer (PAPY). The study also aimed to assemble symmetrical supercapacitor full cells using hybrid composites as electrodes.鈥

According to the researchers, 鈥渢he physical characteristics of the composites were evaluated using four-point probe conductivity test and thermogravimetric analyses.鈥 Furthermore, their study showed that the 鈥渢he energy density (1.82 Wh/L) and power density (50.31 W/L) values of PAPY/MWCNT/ACF fall well within the supercapacitor range of the Ragone plot, making it an ideal supercapacitor electrode material.鈥

Biology students from the 水果视频 鈥 Graduate School presented research papers on the ecology of Laguna de Bay and its watershed during the May 20-24, 2018 Japan Geoscience Union Meeting. Elfritzson Peralta lectured on 鈥淪table isotopes reveal anthropogenic impacts on the littoral food webs of Laguna de Bay, Philippines鈥. Likewise, Mary Michelle Guinto presented a research poster entitled 鈥淶ooplankton community structure in the littoral zones of Laguna de Bay reflects land cover and nutrient loading in near-shore areas鈥. Lastly, MSc Biology alumna and Senior High School faculty member Irisse Bianca B. De Jesus presented a paper entitled, 鈥淪patial variation in phosphorus and nitrogen spiral metrics in a tropical watershed in relation to land uses鈥.

Thomasian participants also shared their works in the Isotope Workshop that discussed results of ongoing researches in stream and lake ecosystems using isotope analyses. Asst. Prof.聽Felicidad Christina Ramirez, Ph.D. of the聽听补苍诲听Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences聽presented updates of her research entitled, 鈥淭racing phosphate sources in the Silang-Sta. Rosa Subwatershed using oxygen isotopes鈥. Similarly, Peralta presented updates on his research on isotope ecology in Philippine freshwater systems.

JpGU is an academic union that encompasses all the Earth and Planetary Sciences disciplines and related fields, organizing annual meetings since 2005. Presentations were all done under the 鈥淢aterials transport and nutrient cycles in watersheds; Human and climate impacts鈥 session. The participation of the students was made possible through the research project entitled Biodiversity-driven Nutrient Cycling and Human well-being in Social-ecological Systems鈥 also known as the 鈥渆-REC Project鈥 funded by the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (Kyoto, Japan) led by Prof. Dr. Noboru Okuda with Prof. Dr.  as project leader for the 水果视频.

Winning the Best Poster in the Engineering Sciences and Technology Division were:

Felicidad Christina Ramirez, Prof. Christina A. Binag, PhD, Ms. Stephanie Chua, MSc, and David Joseph Alzate. Ramirez and Binag are from the College of Science, while Chua and Alzate are from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Graduate School, respectively.

Winning a Special Citation in the Outstanding Book Awards were Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Maribel G. Nonato, PhD, and Prof. Ma. Minerva P. Calimag, MD, PhD, who were co-authors in the 鈥淓ncyclopedia of Common Medicinal Plants of the Philippines, Volume 1.鈥 Nonato and Calimag joined the following authors: Dr. Domingo A. Madulid, Dr. Esperanza Maribel G. Agoo, Dr. Isidro C. Sia, Dr. Myrna L. Abello, Dr. Rita Grace Y. Alvero, Dr. Anne Josephine C. Quitain, Dr. Irene M. Villasenor, Dr. Rene Angelo S. Machig, and Dr. Fabian M. Dayrit. They represented the Philippine Institute for Traditional and Alternative Health Care.
