“My mission as a leader, educator, and researcher is actually to champion the 5Ps: the medical profession, the Philippine Medical Association, my fellow physicians and peers, my patients, and the planet,鈥 Calimag said during the awarding ceremonies aired via Facebook Live.

The two-time former President of the Philippine Medical Association is not just a leader in the academe and medical practice, but also some who successfully navigated the shift to remote learning due to the pandemic. Part of her expertise includes capacity-building of healthcare professionals in research through digital workflows in research management. As early as 2014, Calimag conceptualized and co-developed a cloud-based online program for the continuing professional development of health professionals.

Highlighting her role as a recognized Thomasian e-learning specialist, Calimag joins the Commission on Higher Education-UP Open University (UPOU-CHeD), whose initiative is to hold training programs on Flexible Teaching and Learning. Moreover, Calimag also joins the Association of Philippine-Medical Colleges – Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and University (APMC-PAASCU) to guide the fellow medical educators on Hyflex Teaching.

The Thomasian e-learning specialist has also utilized the digital media in engaging and influencing communities, patients, and physician-peers to embrace her pharmacovigilance advocacy on promotion of drug safety and drug anti-counterfeiting initiatives.听

“I engage legislators, policy-makers, barangay health workers, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists about the dangers of substandard drugs,” she said. “Itinataguyod ko ang kahalagahan kung bakit dapat ang bawat isa sa atin ay dapat maging mapanuri sa mga gamot na ating iniinom,” Calimag said. Lastly, Calimag integrates her environmental conservation advocacy in various engagements, both online and offline.

The prestigious recognition, previously conferred upon Thomasian educators like former Medicine and Surgery Dean Angeles Tan-Alora, MD, retired Chemistry Professor Emerita Assistant Dean Beatrice Q. Guevara, PhD, former Education Dean Allan B. de Guzman, PhD, and Microbiology expert Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., fittingly comes on the occasion of the 150th founding anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

Professor Rowena L. Escolar Chua, PhD, Dean of the College of Nursing, was one of the keynote speakers in the May 27-30, 2021 Asia Pacific Bioethics Education Network (APBEN) Conference, hosted this year by Deakin University, Australia.

In her keynote speech entitled 鈥淢oral distress in nursing education: How should educators respond?鈥, Dean Escolar Chua acknowledged how the pandemic and its consequent restrictions on mobility have forced 鈥渘ursing educators鈥o rapidly change their way of working to manage remote teaching and learning, often with little lead-time. While some educators have been positive, responsive, and solution-focused, for many this transition has not been easy, particularly in areas where there is limited connectivity.鈥

Dean Escolar Chua reiterated the 鈥渃ommon belief among nurse educators is that if skills are not practiced onsite, then it is not effective teaching nor learning.鈥 This belief has caused many to 鈥渇eel worried about their students not being on track with their learning and that they won鈥檛 have the right skills and knowledge to manage to learn remotely. Moreover, balancing work and personal demands is challenging. Some teachers lose their confidence and feel frustrated and isolated causing them to experience moral distress.鈥

Despite these grim realities, Dean Escolar Chua said that 鈥渢his pandemic brings a vast array of opportunities on how to foster nursing educators鈥 wellbeing that encourages building and strengthening caring relationships with one another and with their students and prioritize designing and sustaining classrooms where everyone feels emotionally and physically safe and supported.鈥

A Full Professor of the University, Dean Escolar Chua holds a doctorate in development studies and has recently been studying experiences of moral distress, moral sensitivity, and moral courage among Philippine nursing students especially during the time of the pandemic.
